Students and Parents,
Welcome to the 2015-2016 Coosa Christian Elementary School Fifth Grade Summer Super Hero Reading Program.
I am very excited to be your teacher next year. Fifth grade is a difficult grade, but I believe with my hands-on activities, songs, chants, and mnemonics that you will end fifth grade a stronger, more independent individual.
As a rising fifth grader, I will only ask two things of you during this summer time. I will require a small summer reading packet to be completed before you return to school for a fiction and a nonfiction book. These assignments will be your first reading and science grades and you will also earn a "Super Hero" star for our door. They will be due August 21st.
IF YOU ARE A NEW STUDENT, AND YOU REGISTERED WITH COOSA CHRISTIAN BEFORE JULY 1, YOU ARE UNDER THE SAME DEADLINES. IF YOU REGISTERED BETWEEN JULY 1-19, YOUR ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE DUE SEPTEMBER 11TH. IF YOU REGISTERED BETWEEN JULY 22- AUGUST 16, YOUR ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE DUE OCTOBER 2nd.
Now that your summer vacation has begun, you will have plenty of free time. I want you to enjoy your time off by kicking back, relaxing, and picking up a few good books.
Many children, especially struggling readers, forget some of what they've learned or slip out of practice during the summer months.
Preventing Summer Slide
For some children, summer is a time dedicated to playing video games, sleeping in, playing more video games, vacationing, and playing more video games. Unfortunately, research does not show that playing video games will increase your reading level. Children may argue that summer should be spent taking a break from academics and enjoy doing “nothing”. As parents and educators we need to ensure that our children do not fall into what is commonly referred to as “summer slide”.
The summer slide can sound fun, but it can make the transition from grade to grade really difficult. Research shows that students who do not read during the summer may experience a decrease in their reading levels. But guess what? Students who read regularly during the summer often improve their reading level and ability! Coosa fifth graders can start strong in the fall if their reading habits don’t “slide” away during the summer months. What reading level is your child on?
Six books to summer success: Research shows that reading just six books during the summer may keep a struggling reader from regressing and help advanced reader progress.
WELL.. THE GOOD NEW IS THAT I AM ONLY REQUIRING YOU TO READ TWO BOOKS. In addition, you will be asked to complete an activity that will go with each book, but please remember the more you read during the summer months the more you will be ready for in fifth grade.
=============================================================
1.) Read The Cabin Faced West and complete the packet below
2.) Choose a non-fiction science book (length of book is your choice) about an insect and write a short summary about it. Bring in the bibliography facts about your book.
